West Fargo Sheyenne wins NDHSAA Girls Tennis Team Dual State Championship

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – West Fargo Sheyenne’s girls tennis team was dominant during the 2019 North Dakota High School Activities Association team dual state tournament.

The Mustangs won all three of their duals 5-0 on their way to a state championship on Thursday, May 30 at Grand Forks Choice Health & Fitness.

West Fargo Sheyenne clinched its second team dual title in program history by sweeping Fargo Davies in the championship match.

Junior Monti Knewtson paced the Mustangs with a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Davies’ Madison Bell and No. 1 singles.

Preeti Chemiti and Mimi Gu also picked up singles wins for Sheyenne in the state championship dual.

In doubles, the pairs of Abby College & Miranda Sommerfeld and Kaitlin Sundlie and Hailey Raan posted victories for the Mustangs in the championship dual.

West Fargo Sheyenne opened the day with a sweep over Dickinson in the quarterfinals followed by a sweep of Fargo North in the semifinals.

The Mustangs’ previous state team dual title came in 2016.

Individual Singles and Doubles State Tournaments were held May 31-June 1.

Shaelyn Johnson of Grand Forks Red River defeated Monti Knewtson of West Fargo Sheyenne 6-2, 6-2 for the individual singles state championship.

Preeti Chemiti and Mimi Gu of West Fargo Sheyenne won the Doubles State Championship.
