MANDAN, N.D. – Tioga High School made up a seven shot deficit from Day 1 of the North Dakota High School Activities Association Class B Boys Golf State Tournament to win the event by 13 strokes on Wednesday at Prairie West Golf Course.
The Pirates shot a two-day total of 650 (340-310) to win the program’s first ever grass greens state title. Tioga won the 1979 Sand Greens state championship, which was discontinued in the state in 1995.
Leading Tioga was Mitchell Fifer, who shot an even-par 72 on Wednesday to surge up the leaderboard. Fifer’s 7-over 79 on Tuesday put him three shots back from Heart River’s Joey Wagner, who finished runner up. Fifer scored four birdies on Wednesday – three coming on the back nine holes.
Fifer is Tioga’s first medalist since 1980 when Lowell Pederson took home the individual state title.
