NDHSAA June Board Meeting Recap

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The North Dakota High School Activities Association’s Board of Directors met June 12th and 13th in Valley City.

The agenda included several recommendations from Athletic Review and Coaches Advisory to be voted on.

The Board voted on 17 total recommendations from Athletic Review and Coaches Advisory. Highlights from Athletic Review and Coaches Advisory recommendations included: 


  • Permit game or replay officials to use a replay monitor during televised state tournament contests to determine if a scored goal at the expiration of time during any quarter, half, or overtime period should be counted, and if so, determine if it is a two-point or three-point goal. Board Vote: Passed 11-0.


  • Rewrite the mercy rule to: a. When the point differential reaches 30 or more points in the 4th quarter, the clock will continue to run. b. The clock will only be stopped for free throws, time outs, and injuries. c. Officials will not put time back on the clock that may have run off prior to recognizing that free throws are to be shot. Board Vote: Passed 11-0


  • Under Regulation 9: Goalkeepers shall occupy the goal closest to their Team’s players’ bench for the shootout. The home team shall have the choice of shooting first or second. The teams shall alternate shots. Board Vote: Passed 11-0

  • Under OVERTIME GAME REGULATIONS #5: In state tournament consolation games, a shootout will determine a winner following the first overtime period. Board Vote: Passed 11-0


The NDHSAA Board of Directors nominated and selected Andy Dahlen, Principal at Fargo North High School, as its President for the 2017-18 school year. Ben Schafer, Superintendent at Ray Public School, was nominated and selected as Vice President in 2017-18.

The site of the 2018 Class B Baseball and Softball State Tournament was changed from Mandan to Jamestown. The tournament will be played May 31, June 1-2 at Jack Brown Stadium and Lyle Trapper Lawrence Field.
