FARGO – Since 2012, when Class B softball received NDHSAA sponsorship, Central Cass and Kindred/Richland have been two of the top programs in the state.
Between the two programs, either Central Cass or Kindred has appeared in the state championship game every season since 2012. Entering the 2019 NDHSAA State Tournament, both squads had won three state titles. Twice (2014 and 2017) the Squirrels and Vikings met in the state title game with Kindred winning both meetings.
The two East Region rivals have some history with one another and the latest chapter played out Saturday, June 1 at Tharaldson Park – the team's third meeting in a state softball championship game.
Central Cass defeated Kindred/Richland 6-2 in the championship game of the 2019 NDHSAA State Tournament.
Kindred/Richland jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning scoring one run on a sacrifice fly by Bren Koppang and another courtesy of an RBI single off the bat of Tina Freier.
Central Cass junior Isabelle Linnard tied the game 2-2 with a two-run single in the third inning. Linnard scored on a RBI-double off the wall by senior Lexi Buhr.
The Squirrels never gave up the lead and added three more runs in the fifth inning.
Lexi Buhr was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and also pitched a complete game with one strikeout for the Squirrels.
The Squirrels’ previous state championships were 2013, 2015 and 2018.
