FARGO – In a battle of unbeaten teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the latest North Dakota High School Class A boys basketball poll, top-ranked Fargo Davies came out on top with a 74-47 win over West Fargo Sheyenne.
Friday night’s Eastern Dakota Conference meeting between the Eagles and the Mustangs was played in front of a packed house at Davies High School. As far as early January meetings go this one was highly anticipated with both squads sporting identical 7-0 records.
“Like I’ve said, it’s early January,” Davies head coach Bart Manson said. “It was a fun game. It was a great crowd, it was electric in there. I just thought our kids tonight came out and they competed. We did enough defensively to make sure we got stops. I thought our guys did a really good job of rebounding the ball and not letting them get second chances.”
Davies (8-0, 7-0 Eastern Dakota Conference) turned in a quality performance fitting of its ranking holding the Mustangs to 47 points – 26 points below their season average through seven games.
Offensively, the Eagles got a spark off the bench from senior guard Ty Satter (a North Dakota State football signee), who led the Eagles with a game-high 22 points including a slam dunk that enthralled the crowd in the second half.
Davies senior guard and North Dakota State basketball signee Grayson Haman added 15 points for the Eagles.
“We take a lot of pride in our defense,” Haman said. “We let it feed our offense and we go from there.”
West Fargo Sheyenne was led by senior guards Zion Dettmann and Blake Berg who each scored 10 points. The Mustangs are now 7-1 overall and 6-1 in EDC play.
