GRAND FORKS – Minot High is runner up no longer in the North Dakota High School Activities Association girls soccer ranks.
The Magicians defeated Fargo Davies 6-0 during the 2021 NDHSAA girls soccer championship match played Saturday, June 5 at Cushman Field to earn the program’s first ever state title in the sport.
Prior to Saturday’s win against the Eagles, Minot had previously appeared in two different NDHSAA girls soccer state championship matches (2010 and 2019). Minot lost the 2010 championship to West Fargo High via a shootout and in 2019 the Magicians were edged by Fargo Shanley 2-1.
Minot left little to chance in Saturday’s title match against Fargo Davies.
Senior forward Lainey Sandberg scored three minutes into the match and freshman midfielder Maicee Burke put the Magicians up 2-0 two minutes later with a goal.
With just over 11 minutes remaining in the first half, junior midfielder Morgan Perrin scored on a free-kick to put the Magicians up 3-0.
In the final minute of the first half, Minot junior forward MaLiah Burke scored a goal giving the Magicians a 4-0 lead entering halftime.
Maicee Burke and Sandberg each added another goal in the second half for Minot.
The Magicians’ six goals is the most scored by any team in a championship match since the NDHSAA began sponsoring girls soccer starting with the 1996 season.
Fargo Davies was playing in their fifth state championship match as a program.
Minot finishes its season 16-0-0. Davies wrapped up the season 12-4-1.
Earlier Saturday, Mandan defeated West Fargo High 2-0 in the fifth-place match and West Fargo Sheyenne defeated Fargo Shanley 1-0 in the third-place match.
