JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Bismarck High’s softball program broke through on Saturday, June 4 to become a member of Class A softball teams to have won a state championship.
The Demons defeated defending state champions Dickinson 7-6 in the 2022 NDHSAA Class A softball state championship game played at Lyle “Trapper” Lawrence Field.
Three times – 2017, 2019 and 2021 – Bismarck High had played in a state championship game only to come up just short.
On Saturday, the Demons rallied and made sure 2022 wasn’t going to be another setback.
Bismarck High jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of a two-run home run hit by senior pitcher Logan Gronberg, but the Midgets answered with five runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning.
The Demons got one back in the third inning and regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning by plating four runs. Senior shortstop Payton Gerving and Groberg each had RBI singles in the top of the fourth, but sophomore outfielder Brielle Wrangham provided an impactful two-run double that put the Demons up 7-5.
Dickinson scored a run in the sixth inning, but was unable to get the equalizer.
Gerving finished the game 4-for-5 with three runs scored for the Demons. Gronberg was 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and three RBIs. Wrangham was 3-for-4 for Bismarck High and finished with three RBIs.
Dickinson was led by Jenna Decker and Amy Fridley with each ending the game 2-for-4 at the plate. Decker knocked in three runs while Fridley scored two runs for the Midgets.
