MINOT – West Fargo has returned to the top spot in the ranks of Class A softball.

The Packers defeated Bismarck High 8-6 during the championship game of the North Dakota High School Activities Association Class A Softball State Tournament held at the South Hill Softball Complex.

The Packers had won nine straight NDHSAA-sponsored softball championships from 2009-2017. In 2018, West Fargo’s streak of championships came to an end as Minot claimed the state title.

West Fargo jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Bismarck High stormed back taking a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth inning when senior Emma Barta connected for an RBI double and rounded all the bases scoring after a West Fargo fielding error.

The Demons extended their lead to 6-3 getting RBI hits from Payton Gerving and Macy Wetsch.

West Fargo would mount a rally and ultimately regain the lead.

Sophomore Jadyn Iverson hit a pinch hit two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 6-6.

Later in the sixth, freshman Sophie Ochocki came up with bases loaded and two outs. Ochocki knocked in the the go-ahead and eventual winning runs with an RBI single.
