MANDAN – West Fargo Sheyenne has been to the NDHSAA Class A baseball state championship game before so Saturday’s title tilt against fellow Eastern Dakota Conference member Fargo Shanley wasn’t uncharted waters.
This time around, however, the Mustangs rallied to pick up a 11-1 title-game win over the Deacons to secure the program’s first state championship on Saturday, June 5 at BNC National Bank Field at Veteran’s Memorial Ballpark in Mandan. West Fargo Sheyenne’s previous and only other Class A baseball state championship game appearance came in 2016 where the Mustangs lost to Dickinson at the same ball field.
Shanley jumped out to a 1-0 lead, plating its lone run in the bottom of the first inning.
Sheyenne would answer big in the top of the third that saw the Mustangs score eight runs and take full control of the game’s momentum. Sheyenne would add three runs in the top of the fifth inning and after holding the Deacons scoreless in the bottom half of the fifth, the Mustangs were celebrating a state title.
Six players for Sheyenne had multi-hit games. Junior outfielder Cooper Borchardt led the Mustangs going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored. Senior shortstop Alex Urlaub was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
On the mond the Mustangs fed off of the work turned in by senior pitcher Lance Oster who struck out one batter and only allowed the run on two hits during his outing.
Shanley was led by senior outfielder Ben Ostlie who was 3-for-3 with one RBI.
Earlier Saturday, West Fargo defeated Grand Forks Red River 10-0 in the fifth-place game and Dickinson defeated Bismarck Legacy 7-5 in the third-place game.
