Central's Cole Hanson medals, GFRR 3-peats as team champs in A boys golf

WAHPETON – Grand Forks Central senior Cole Hanson never gave up his Day 1 lead at the 2019 North Dakota High School Activities Association Class A Boys Golf State Tournament.

Hanson shot a even-par 71 on Wednesday, June 5 at Bois de Sioux Golf Course to clinch medalist honors.

Entering Wednesday’s final round, Hanson held a two stroke lead over Jacob Skarperud (Shanley), Koby Kuenzel (Grand Forks Red River), Max Karnik (Fargo Davies), Zach Johnson (Bismarck Century) and Zach Teske (West Fargo) after finishing Tuesday with a 1-under 70.

On Wednesday, Hanson scored birdies on holes 7, 8, 12 and 17. He won the tournament by two strokes earning a two-day total of 141. Seth Badolato of Grand Forks Red River finished runner up with a two-day total of 143. Badolato shot a two-under 69 on Wednesday as did Grand Forks Central junior Brandon McGarry, who finished fourth.

The best West Region individual finisher was Bismarck Century senior Zach Johnson, who finished third going 1-over each day for a two-day tally of 144.

In the team competition, Grand Forks Red River took first place with a two-day total of 589 strokes. Grand Forks Central took second place with a score of 592. Red River has now won three straight Class A Boys Golf team state championships.
