MINOT – Bismarck Century sophomore golfing standout Hannah Herbel successfully defended her NDHSAA Class A girls golf individual state championship on Tuesday, October 6.
Herbel won her third-consecutive NDHSAA Class A girls golf individual state championship shooting a two-day total of 145. She won the tournament by three strokes.
Herbel became the state’s first Class A girls golf player to win three straight individual state titles since Jamestown’s Laura Kraft won three in a row from 2008 to 2010.
Herbel entered the day with a five-stroke lead over Williston junior Carrie Carmichael and Fargo Shanley senior Greta McArthur after shooting a 1-under 71 in her Day 1 round.
Day 2 started with a bogey on Hole 1, but a birdie on Hole 6 brought her Day 2 round back to even par. Herbel bogied Holes 8, 11 and 15 allowing McArthur to get within three strokes of the lead heading into the final three holes of the tournament. Both Herbel and McArthur scored par on Hole 16, but McArthur cut Herbel’s lead to two strokes heading into the final hole with a birdie on Hole 17.
Herbel finished strong scoring a birdie on Hole 18 with a socially distanced gallery looking on.
McArthur finished her Day 2 round with an even-par 72 and posted a two day total of 148 for runner up honors. McArthur earned North Dakota High School Coaches Association Senior Athlete of the Year honors (as voted on by the state’s Class A Girls Golf Coaches).
McArthur’s performance paced the Deacons to a team state championship. Shanley led the team race by three strokes after Day 1 and totaled 656 strokes as a team for the tournament winning by nine strokes over runner up Bismarck Century (665).
Shanley’s last Class A girls golf team state championship came in 2007. The team state title is the Deacons’ fifth in program history (2020, 2007, 2006, 2005, 1996).
