FARGO – North Dakota Class A girls golf had its own “Duel in the Sun” so to speak on Tuesday, October 5 at Edgewood Golf Course.

Fargo Davies sophomore Lexi Bartley and three-time defending NDHSAA Class A girls golf individual state medalist Hannah Herbel – a junior at Bismarck Century – played a five-hole playoff to decide 2021 medalist honors.

Bartley edged Herbel in the playoff that put an end to one of the most memorable Class A girls golf state tournaments in recent memory.

The playoff was “must-see” golf attracting a massive galley that got their steps in on Tuesday as Bartley and Herbel kept on playing well into the sun-drenched afternoon.

Both golfers parred Holes 10, 11 and 12. Both Bartley and Herbel scored birdies on Hole 13. Hole 14 was where Bartley separated. Bartley’s approach shot landed near the pin, setting up a birdie putt opportunity. Herbel parred the hole putting the spotlight on Bartley’s birdie try for the win.

Bartley made the birdie putt and with it earned individual medalist honors. She is the second golfer from Davies high school to win an individual state championship joining Jennifer Marsh who won back-to-back medals in 2014 and 2015.

Bartley and Herbel finished with 36-hole round scores of 7-over 151. Entering Round 2, Herbel held a four-stroke lead. Herbel’s Round 2 on Tuesday wasn’t as steady as her play on Monday. Herbel scored five bogies on Tuesday and a double bogey on Hole 7. The field made up ground on Herbel and at the turn she was tied with Bartley and Williston senior Carrie Carmicheal.

A bogey on 18 by Herbel set up the playoff with Bartley. Bartley’s Round 2 was up and down. She also had five bogies, but what allowed her to make up ground was three birdies including a big one on Hole 17.

Perhaps the most impressive part of Tuesday for Bartley was she had bogied Hole 14 during her scored round, but in the playoff executed a series of three shots that will be remembered for years to come.

Fargo Davies also took home the team state championship scoring a team total of 629 strokes – 20 better than runner up Bismarck Century. The team state title is Fargo Davies’ fourth in program history. The Eagles also had won team titles in 2011, 2012 and 2015.
