FARGO – In a battle of undefeated teams at the Dakota Bowl on Friday, November 10, Hillsboro/Central Valley came out on top.
The Burros defeated Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich 16-14 in the North Dakota High School Activities Association Division A football state title game during Dakota Bowl XXV.
Hillsboro/Central Valley (12-0) led 8-6 at halftime. The Burros added to their lead in the third quarter when Ryan Troftgruben completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Bergstrom. A two-point run by Grant Skager was good to give the Burros a 16-6 lead.
The Cardinals answered late in the fourth quarter when Jacob Delvo completed a 10 yard touchdown pass to Anfernee Economy. A two point conversion via pass got the Cardinals to within two points of the Burros with 1:16 remaining.
The Burros’ Bergstrom smothered a Cardinals’ onside-kick attempt and Hillsboro/Central Valley wound the clock down to seal the victory.
Skager finished with 188 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Burros.
Delvo was 10 of 22 passing for 210 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Cardinals.
The state title is the first football championship for the Hillsboro/Central Valley co-op. Hillsboro won a 9-man title in 2008 and Central Valley won a 9-man state championship in 1999.
Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich finished its season 11-1.
