FARGO – The third time proved to be the charm for West Fargo Sheyenne at the Dakota Bowl.
The Mustangs defeated cross-town rival West Fargo High 27-7 in the NDHSAA Division 11AA Football State Championship Game during Dakota Bowl XXIX on Friday, November 12 at the FARGODOME.
West Fargo Sheyenne, playing in the program’s third straight NDHSAA football state title game, had previously lost to Bismarck Century in the 2019 and 2020 NDHSAA Division AAA state title games.
Helping the Mustangs change their fortunes at the Dakota Bowl was senior running back Josh Henricks who rushed for 238 yards on 39 carries for three touchdowns.
West Fargo Sheyenne led 14-0 at halftime, but West Fargo High started the second half with a scoring drive that ended with senior wide receiver and North Dakota State football commit Carson Hegerle hauling in a four-yard touchdown reception from senior quarterback Peyton Jantzi.
The swing in momentum was short-lived as Hericks capped off another Mustangs’ drive with a rushing touchdown later in the third quarter.
West Fargo Sheyenne senior quarterback Grant Warkenthien scored on a two-yard keeper midway through the fourth quarter adding to the Mustangs’ cushion.
The Mustangs kept the Packers’ rushing attack quiet for much of the game. Hegerle finished the game with seven catches for 69 yards.
Warkenthien ended with 65 yards rushing to help the Mustangs’ to an undefeated 12-0 season.
Friday’s loss was the first time West Fargo High had ever lost at the Dakota Bowl. The Packers entered the game 6-0 all-time in Dakota Bowl appearances, winning NDHSAA football state titles in 1993 (NDHSAA Class A, 11-Man), 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2017 (NDHSAA Division AAA). The Packers end the season 9-3.
