WEST FARGO – It had been 10 years since a girls swimming and diving team from the East won an NDHSAA team state championship.

The drought ended Saturday, November 11 when West Fargo Sheyenne won the 2022 NDHSAA girls swimming and diving team state championship at the Hulbert Aquatic Center.

The Mustangs tallied 340 points and in the process won the program’s first ever team state championship. The previous team from the East to win a NDHSAA girls swimming and diving team state championship was Fargo North in 2012.

Sheyenne took first in the 200 Yard Medley Relay and 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. Both relays featured the quartet of Brooklyn Keney, Lauren McDonagh, Tierney Howell, and Madee Shea.

Howell, a University of Houston commit, also won individual state titles in the 50 Yard freestyle (23.80 seconds) and 100 Yard Butterfly (56.39 seconds). Howell ends her prep career with three individual state championships and two relay state titles. She’ll also graduate as the state record holder in the 100 Yard Butterfly (set during her sophomore year at the 2020 state meet).
