BISMARCK – The two teams playing in the 2022 NDHSAA Class A volleyball state championship match – West Fargo Sheyenne and Bismarck Century – both sported identical 34-2 records, but in terms of championship match experience the Mustangs and Patriots differed.
Century was playing in their 12th consecutive state championship match whereas West Fargo Sheyenne was playing in their first in program history.
Both programs split two regular season meetings at tournaments earlier this fall making the rubber match in the state final a must see. Would Century add another state title during their decade-plus run of dominance? Or would West Fargo Sheyenne make the most of their first appearance in a state championship match and win its first state title?
The conclusion of a two hour-plus thrilling five set match would answer those questions.
West Fargo Sheyenne edged Bismarck Century 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-8) in the 2022 NDHSAA Class A volleyball state championship match played Saturday, November 19 at the Bismarck Event Center.
Leading the way for the Mustangs was senior outside hitter Kailee Waasdorp who posted 27 kills in the championship match. Senior outside hitter Reagan Bogenreif added 16 kills for the Mustangs. Senior middle hitter Khloe Brown joined Waasdorp and Bogenreif in double figures finishing with 11 kills.
Century senior outside hitter Logan Nissley finished the match with 20 kills and surpassed the 1,000 career kills milestone during the match.
West Fargo Sheyenne finished the season 35-2. Century finished 34-3.
