2017-18 NDHSAA Boys Hockey Preview

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The 2017-18 North Dakota High School Activities Association boys hockey season is underway.

Grand Forks Central is the defending NDHSAA state champion after skating to an undefeated season a year ago.

Grand Forks Red River topped the preseason Statewide Coaches Poll followed closely by Central. The Knights and Roughriders split first place votes in the East Region Coaches Poll.

Out West, Bismarck Century has been tabbed the preseason favorite to win the West Region.

Top returning scorers in the state are senior forward Isaiah Thomas (Bismarck Century) and senior forward Jake Viall (Minot) each posted 47 points last season.

The East’s top returning scorer is Grand Forks Red River senior forward Mason Salquist (43 points).

The state’s top returning goaltender resides at Grand Forks Central. Junior Kaleb Johnson had a 91.7 save percentage a year ago and helped the Knights to the 2017 NDHSAA state title. Johnson had 47 saves during the state tournament including 27 in the championship game.

2017-18 NDHSAA Boys Hockey Important Dates:

East Region Tournament: Feb. 13, 16-17 at Grand Forks
West Region Tournament: Feb. 15-17 at Minot
State Tournament: Feb. 22-24 at Grand Forks
