OTTAWA – On Thursday, March 30, 2023 Fargo Davies High School graduate Tyler Kleven made his National Hockey League debut as a defenseman with the Ottawa Senators.

Kleven had three shots on goal and recorded one assist in the Senators’ 5-4 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.

Kleven played one season with Fargo Davies (2017-18) – his sophomore prep season scoring nine goals and adding seven assists for 16 points before departing to play with the United States National Development Team Program that competes in the United States Hockey League (USHL) for two seasons.

After the 2019-20 USHL season was suspended due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Kleven returned to Fargo and graduated with his classmates in the spring of 2020 and quickly began preparing for his collegiate men’s hockey career at the University of North Dakota.

On October 7, 2020 Kleven was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the second round (44th overall) of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

At UND, Kleven tallied 14 career goals and seven assists (21 points) in 48 games played over three seasons.

Kleven signed his pro contract with Ottawa last week.

Kleven is just the second Fargo high school player to play in the NHL.

Danny Irmen, who played one year at Fargo North before transferring to Grand Forks Red River, suited up for two NHL games with the Minnesota Wild.

Kleven is the latest North Dakota prep boys hockey player to make his NHL Debut since 2013 Grand Forks Red River graduate Jon Lizotte made his debut with the Minnesota Wild in October of 2021.
